POLAND – The Poland Regional High School Committee this week voted to support the Light the Knights committee in its efforts to raise enough money for improvements to the school’s athletic fields.

The committee is named after the high school mascot and was formed in June with approval of the School Committee. Its intention is to light the football/soccer field for night and evening games.

Principal Bill Doughty said he thought support from the School Committee would instill confidence in potential contributors.

Light the Knights committee organizer, and co-curricular activities director for the high school, Don King, presented the School Committee with a plan for improvements. He hopes to secure enough funding to light the field, install a press box, a sound system, an entrance marquis, seating for baseball and softball games, a ticket booth, as well as paving the new entry and a walkway.

King said he hopes that lighting the field will allow for more evening games, and therefore allow more parents and spectators to attend after their work day.

King estimates the total cost for the project will be around $150,000. After the initial cost of installation, he estimates that the lights will be run approximately 100 hours a year, which would be about $525 a year for electricity.

The School Committee gave a unanimous vote of confidence.

The project will move forward with soliciting donations and organizing fundraisers. Any business or individual interested in donating, is asked to contact King at (207) 998-5400 ex. 136, or [email protected].

People interested in serving on the Light the Knights committee are also urged to contact him.

Also at Wednesday’s School Committee meeting, members approved several teacher nominations. These nominations now fill all vacancies in the high school teaching staff.

Dean of Students Ray Lafreniere notified the committee that he had tried to contact all entering freshman who will be attending the high school to welcome them to the school and offer his assistance if they needed it.
