FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – Andy Herron scored in the 24th minute to give the Chicago Fire a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Sunday.
Herron dribbled down the left side and beat Matt Reis for his fifth goal of the season.
Chicago goalkeeper Zach Thornton then withstood a second-half New England onslaught to give the Fire (7-8-7) their second consecutive win.
New England (6-7-10), which had two second-half goals nullified by offsides calls, has failed to score in the last two games and is winless in its last six.
Thornton faced only one shot in the first half, but after Herron hit a post in the 46th minute, he came under siege.
First he stopped a bid by Andy Dorman, then in the 53rd minute, a goal by Taylor Twellman was waved off for offsides. New England’s Pat Noonan hit the crossbar in the 64th minute, and Thornton stopped Twellman in the 83rd. An offsides call negated another New England goal in the 89th minute.
The game was slowed by nine yellow cards, six against Chicago. Revolution coach Steve Nicol was incensed when Chicago’s Chad Barrett was not given a red card for shoving Jay Heaps in the first half.
