FREEPORT – Paul M. Roane Sr., 90, formerly of Bath, died Thursday, Aug. 24, at Hawthorne House from complications of a stroke on July 5.

He was born in Lowell, Mass., on July 7, 1916, a son of George W. and Elizabeth Glynn Roane. He was brought up by his Aunt Molly Roane. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1934, and in 1935 took post-graduate courses. He graduated from Burdett College in 1937.

On June 4, 1949, he married Priscilla L. Brown at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick.

He went to work for McQuaide Clothing in Boston. On Nov. 30, 1942, he joined the Army and served as an automatic weapons instructor. He saw duty in Italy in the 605th Field Artillery, Battery A of the 10th Mountain Division. He received the Bronze Star Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Medal.

After the war, he returned to work at McQuaide’s as a buyer, followed by Brown-Durell (wholesale dry goods) in Boston. He went to work for Atlantic Tire and was transferred to Brunswick and managed the store there.

In the early 1950s, he operated Roane’s on the corner of Maine and Pleasant streets, where he sold gasoline, Nash automobiles, appliances and sporting goods. In the late 1950s he was a factory representative for US Rubber Co. In 1958, he went to work for Mohawk Rubber Co. for whom he worked for many years.

Upon his retirement he enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing and riding his bicycle. He also enjoyed attending 10th Mountain Division reunions.

In 1996, he suffered several strokes, after which he lived at Winship Green, Hillhouse Assisted Living, Freeport Place and finally Hawthorne House.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic churches, Knights of Columbus, Brunswick Lions Club, 70+ Ski Club and was a Cubmaster for Pack 53.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathie Back of Waterville; five sons, Paul M. Roane Jr. and his wife, Sally, of Brunswick, George J. Roane of Kennebunk, Thomas A. Roane and his wife, Jean, of Sabattus, Peter J. Roane of Sabattus and Stephen A. Roane and his wife, Martha, of Ashtabula, Ohio.

He was predeceased by a son, Frances J. Roane, Jan. 24, 1980; his wife, who died Aug. 16, 1990; and a brother, John Roane.
