Gray – An inmate who escaped from the Cumberland County Jail on Saturday afternoon was found Sunday evening and returned to the facility.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Donald Goulet said that escapee Misty Hanlon, 24, and Melissa Yargeau, 29, both of Portland, were taken into custody without incident around 5 p.m.

Hanlon faces a Class C crime charge of escape, while Yargeau has been charged with Class C aiding in escape, according to Goulet.

The arrests stemmed from a tip called into Cumberland County Communications shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday. The person who called told authorities that a blue 1990 BMW 325i matching the description of Hanlon’s getaway car was in the parking lot at Gray Market Place. Cumberland County Deputy George Bernier responded to the call and found the two women in Yargeau’s car, Deputy Andrew Hannah said Sunday night.

Hanlon fled from the pre-release center of the Cumberland County Jail shortly after the noon head count by officers at the jail. An inmate reported seeing her get into a BMW and memorized the license plate number. The car was driven by Yargeau, Hannah said.

The pre-release center is a facility that allows low-risk inmates to begin transitioning back into society. The center is housed in a separate building from the jail, Hannah said.

Goulet said that at the time of her escape, Hanlon was serving a 180-day sentence at the jail on a probation revocation resulting from two misdemeanor theft charges. She was scheduled to be released on Oct. 17.
