LEWISTON – Commuters using the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge from Lewiston to Auburn should expect delays this morning while Maine Department of Transportation crews finish maintenance work started Monday.

According to Carl Edwards of the Maine Department of Transportation’s Bridge Maintenance Section, traffic coming over the bridge from Lewiston will be reduced to one lane until about noon today. Traffic crossing the bridge from Auburn to Lewiston, however, will not be effected.

“We need to close the lane to provide working space for the supplies and equipment required to eliminate scour holes that have developed in the riverbed on the upstream side of the piers that support the bridge,” Edwards explained. “The scoured areas will be filled with grout to assure the continued integrity of the bridge.”

The Maine Department of Transportation’s underwater dive team will be on site to guide the placement of the grout at the base of the pier, Edwards said.

Edwards said he realized the lane closure may cause inconveniences, but, “It’s maintenance work that needs to be done.”
