AUBURN – A car accident Monday afternoon on Route 4 critically injured 2006 Jay High School graduate Samuel Farrington.

Farrington, 18, of 264 Plaisted Road, Jay, was the president of his graduating class.

According to police Lt. Tim Cougle, two fire engines and a rescue truck responded to the scene near Gammon Landscape Nursery in order to extricate Farrington from the 1996 Dodge Intrepid he was driving.

“Witnesses reported seeing Farrington’s vehicle airborne as it veered off the road,” he said, adding he couldn’t say how it ended up in the woods.

Farrington was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit late Monday evening.

Word of Farrington’s accident spread quickly through the Jay community Monday night, shaking up friends and classmates.

“Our graduating class was really small, so we were all pretty close friends,” explained classmate Katie Mastine.

Jonathan Robitaille and Farrington have been friends and neighbors ever since they were young kids.

“When my mom told me about the accident, I was shocked,” Robitaille said. “Now, I’m just really worried.”

Robitaille said that Farrington was enrolled for fall classes at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland and looking for a new job.

“He was on his way home from a job interview in Auburn when he got in the accident,” Robitaille lamented Monday night.

Mastine, who spoke alongside Farrington at their graduation, called Farrington “just an all-around good kid.”

Robitaille agreed and remarked, “All we can do is keep Sam in our thoughts and hope that he will pull through.”

Farrington’s was the only vehicle involved in the incident. Police were still investigating the cause of the crash Monday night.
