GREENE – Selectmen announced this week that there will be a public hearing next month to discuss the future of Allen Pond’s dam.

After a state report announced that the dam is failing, people approached selectmen Monday night for the second time in hopes of fixing problem before the state decides to take out the dam.

On July 20, a state report said the 10-foot-wide dam is consistently leaking water and the stonework with patchwork concrete fill has developed cracks.

The report states that the right dike is in an imminent state of failure and a chance of a “possible blow out” could occur if the issue is not addressed.

The state informed the caretakers of the dam, the Allen Pond Improvement Association, a nonprofit volunteer group, to bring the matter before the town.

The issue was brought before the board for the second time Monday night and again the association asked the town to take over control of the dam.

Selectmen’s Chairman Ron Grant said he would not support a special town meeting on the issue because he viewed it as a property tax battle and not a safety issue.

Currently, 200 residents live on the pond’s shores.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the fire station.
