HANOVER – A bear cub was struck and killed by a vehicle in the westbound lane of Route 2 at about 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Office deputy William Nelson said Ron McHugh, no age available, of Rumford, was driving westerly near the Hanover/Newry town line when the bear darted in front of his 2006 Ford Ranger pickup truck.

The vehicle was not damaged. Nelson said the dead cub was given to a local person.
