GROTON, Conn. (AP) – Groton police obtained an arrest warrant Friday for a 27-year-old woman they said abandoned a newborn boy early Wednesday morning.

The woman, whose name has not been released, is in Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. She will be charged with abandonment and risk of injury to a minor.

The baby was discovered in a junked car in a parking lot about 5 a.m. Authorities said the suspect was tracked down through a 911 call that alerted police about the child. The caller – a woman – said she heard a baby’s cries coming from the car. Police have not said whether the caller was the suspect.

The child was just hours old when he was found. He was in good condition and taken to L&M Hospital. The state Department of Children and Families was granted temporary custody.

Connecticut enacted a “safe haven” law in 2000 that allows parents to drop off unwanted babies at hospitals rather than abandoning them. To raise awareness of the law early this year, the Department of Children and Families distributed 65,000 pamphlets to middle and high schools, hospitals and social service agencies in all Connecticut cities and towns.

Since the law went into effect in 2000, at least six babies have been dropped off at hospitals. Five have been adopted or are awaiting adoption and the sixth was placed with a relative.
