FITZWILLIAM, N.H. (AP) – The town of Fitzwilliam is holding a special town meeting next month for voters to decide if they want to buy 350 acres to prevent new development.

Selectman Chairman Thomas Parker says the land along Route 119 is available for $1.4 million.

The plan under consideration calls for Fitzwilliam to borrow money to pay for the land. Parker says the purchase would prevent homes from being built there, avoiding tax increases for education and other services.

The town has scheduled several public hearings before the meeting, which will be held on Oct. 17.
