NORTH ANSON (AP) – Federal workplace-safety officials are investigating an accident at a wood-processing mill in which a production manager fell to his death.

Monte Jackson, 53, of Avon died Wednesday at the Cousineau Wood Products Inc. mill, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said.

Investigators said Jackson was trying to dislodge a jam in a conveyor belt when he fell 10 feet onto the concrete floor. Workers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency workers arrived, but Jackson died from a severe head injury.

Mill owner Randy Cousineau said Jackson had been an employee for 10 years but had been associated with the company for three decades. Cousineau said it was a freak accident.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating and is expected to issue a report on whether there were any safety violations within two months.
