WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Laura Martel scored her first two collegiate goals in Maine’s 5-1 rout of Holy Cross in America East soccer action.

Martel scored an unassisted goal in the 29th minute that stood up to be the game-winner, and added an insurance goal in the second half. Veronique Fleury also had a pair of goals for the undefeated Black Bears (4-0-1), and Laura Harper had a goal and two assists.

Shelby Stand broke up Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips’ shutout bid with a goal at 70:35 for Holy Cross (0-4-1).

UMF 3, St. Joe’s 1

STANDISH – Erica Lucas netted the eventual game-winner at 10:49 of the second half as the University of Maine at Farmington took a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph’s in field hockey action Saturday.

Lucas’ game-winner was assisted by Andrea Tyler, who also helped out on a safety five minutes later by Elyse Cole.

Deucey Ward spoiled the shutout with an unassisted goal for the Monks (0-2) with only 47 seconds left in regulation.

Bowdoin 1, Wellesley 0

BRUNSWICK – Lindsay McNamara scored the game-winning goal at 13:40 of the second overtime to lift Bowdoin College to a 1-0 win over Wesllesley in field hockey action Saturday.

Bates 1, Babson 0

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior Allison Marshall scored the game’s only goal on a penalty corner with 31:20 in the first half as Bates slipped by Babson, 1-0, in field hockey action Saturday.

The Bobcats (1-0) controlled play throughout the first half, amassing 14 shots to Babson’s five. The Bobcats broke through just under 14 minutes into the contest, when Marshall hit a drive off a penalty corner that deflected off a defender’s stick and into the cage.

Westfield 2, USM 1

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Kara Guittarr scored an unassisted goal 46 seconds into the second overtime period to lead Westfield to a 2-1 double overtime win over the University of Southern Maine in field hockey action Saturday.

Guittarr’s game-winning goal came after she helped force the overtime periods.

St. Joe’s 2, USM 1

GORHAM – Freshman Heidi Stucki snapped a 1-1 tie with less than seven minutes to play to give St. Joseph’s a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer action Saturday.

Stucki scored on a short one-time shot off a cross from freshman Briana Jordan.

Bowdoin 5, Bridgewater State 1

BRUNSWICK – Katherine Whitley had a goal and an assist to pace Bowdoin to a season-opening 5-1 victory over Bridgewater State in women’s soccer.

Ann Zeigler, Dana Riker, Lynne Tempest, and Alison Chase all tallied goals in the victory for the Polar Bears.

Sacred Heart 1, Maine 0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Jason Tessitore registered the game-winning goal with 28:08 remaining as Sacred Heart clipped the University of Maine 1-0 in men’s soccer action Saturday.

The winning goal was set up by a lob-pass from Anthony Anzevui. Tessitore took the ball just inside the 18-yard box, moved in and used a dribble fake to deke Maine goalie Dereck Loisel.

Bowdoin 2, Bates 1

BRUNSWICK – Nick Figueirido headed home a pass from Anthony Regis in the 25th minute to break a 1-1 tie, leading Bowdoin to a 2-1 victory over rival Bates in the season opener for both teams.

Figueiredo’s goal came only three minutes after Greg Nelson tied the game for the Bobcats, collecting a loose ball in the Bowdoin backfield and driving the ball into the net past Polar Bear keeper Nathan Lovitz.

Framingham State 2, UMF 0

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Rob Harvey converted on a penalty kick to break a scoreless tie in the second half, and the Rams added an insurance tally in the final minutes, handing the University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team a 2-0 defeat.

Football

Maine Maritime 33, Becker 14

CASTINE, Maine (AP) – Brandon Hamilton ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third to lead Maine Maritime to a 33-14 win over Becker on Saturday.

Maine Maritime (1-0) led 13-0 at halftime on Nate Bolduc’s fumble recovery and return for a touchdown and Hamilton’s 16-yard run.

Hamilton threw a 32-yard TD pass to Brian Matthews and scored on a 5-yard run in the second half.

Jacques Faublas caught two touchdown passes from Ryan Grillo for Becker (0-2).
