OLD LYME, Conn. (AP) – A barge slammed into an Amtrak railroad bridge Saturday, delaying trains and stranding boat traffic for several hours.

The 310-foot barge dislodged from a tugboat about 3:30 p.m. It was not known how the towline snapped. The barge carries fuel but was empty at the time of the accident.

Railroad traffic on the bridge was shut down for two hours because the barge destroyed a 75-foot-long fender below the bridge that is designed to protect piers from a direct hit.

Trains were eventually allowed to resume travel over the bridge, but at lower speeds. Some trains were delayed almost two hours.

About 30 sailboats were also stranded.

No one was hurt. The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating.
