BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) – A Marine recruit died shortly after he participated in a strength test, one of the first physical tests recruits take, a spokesman said Sunday.

Adam Aube, 18, of Brunswick, Maine, suffered a medical problem during Saturday morning’s test and died on the way to the hospital, Parris Island spokesman Maj. Guillermo Canedo said.

The cause of death has not been determined, he said.

To pass the initial exam, a recruit must complete 40 crunches and two pull-ups, and complete a 1-mile run in 13 minutes or less, Parris Island officials said. While the strength test is the first done at the basic training sites, all recruits are checked to see if they are physically fit to begin training.

“If they have asthma or a heart murmur they won’t make it,” Canedo said.
