Alvarez prevails

Joe Alvarez of Penobscot Valley Country Club capped a summer of great golf with his first maor victory by garnering the crystal at the Maine Mid-Amateur Championship, a 36-hole event for players 25 or older held last weekend at Sunday River.

Alverez was even par, aided by a hole-in-one on the fourth hole Saturday, entering the second day of the tourney, then held off a charge by Mike Nowak for a 4-shot victory.
