RUMFORD – Selectmen met in a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss a grievance filed by a town police officer.

They also received a request from the newly formed Charter Commission for $2,500 in operating costs.

Board Chairman Jim Rinaldo said the monetary request will go before selectmen at their regular meeting on Sept. 21.

The commission, which met earlier this week, has begun reviewing and revising the 51-year-old document. The funds are needed for hiring a recording secretary, placing legal advertisements, and for printing costs, among other things.

The board also met in a closed session to consider the grievance, which was not identified.

Town Manager Steve Eldridge said the grievance was denied by Chief Stacey Carter, then by Eldridge after he sat down with the officer, Carter and town lawyer Jennifer Kreckel.

The board hearing is the next step in the grievance process. Selectmen have 10 days to decide whether to uphold the police chief and town manager’s decision. If they agree with the previous decisions, then the officer can take the matter to arbitration.
