GREENE – Fire Chief Joe Brown said this week he will attend the Sept. 25 selectmen’s meeting to update the board on what the department has decided to do with its fire and rescue squad.

Brown hopes to bring closure to an issue that surfaced during a June 26 town hearing: the shrinking number of emergency medical technicians available in town to answer weekday emergencies.

Only two of the six members of the fire and rescue team are in town during the working hours of the week. Brown said that has resulted in situations in which the EMTs could not respond.

Regardless of the fire and rescue’s availability, United Ambulance responds to all 911 calls.

The debate at the June hearing was whether the town should change its contract with United Ambulance, making it the town’s primary contact in emergency situations and removing most response duties from the volunteer EMTs.
