Lodges join

AUBURN – Fidelity Rebekah Lodge 4 will consolidate with Liberty Rebekah Lodge 94 in a ceremony that will take place on Monday, Sept. 18, in the activities room at the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Home of Maine.

A light lunch buffet will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a ceremony conducted by Patricia Grass, president of the Rebekah Assembly.

A regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. when there will be election of officers and an observance of the 154th anniversary of the Rebekah degree. All Rebekahs are invited.

Club 50 class

LEWISTON – Valerie St. Clair will facilitate a course on weight loss and hypnotherapy at 6 p.m. Sept. 20, 27 and Oct. 4 and 11 at the Club 50 Room next to Campus Cuisine, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center campus. The cost is $40. Register by calling 753-5467 by Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Society speaker

POLAND – Fred Huntress will speak on “Poland and the Railroads” at a meeting of the Poland Historical Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Old Schoolhouse next to the Poland Town Office, Route 26. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Sodality to install

LEWISTON – The Ladies of St Ann Sodality of the Holy Family Parish will hold a general meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 20, with a potluck supper at 6 p.m. in the church hall.

Installation of officers and counselors will be held and new members will be introduced. Entertainment will be provided by the Golden Nuggetts. Tickets will be $6 and may be obtained from any board members or call Yvette at 782-3722. Nonmembers are also invited.

Seniors lunch

AUBURN – The First Auburn Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Hasty Community Center. Lunch will be fried chicken, followed by bingo.

The fall fair will be held Saturday, Oct. 14, at Hasty Community Center, and members can bring canned food for the food baskets and items for the white elephant table, craft and jewelry tables to the meeting.

The club met on Sept. 6 at the American Legion Hall with 70 present. Attendance winners were Alta Giasson and Marge Gardner; pot of gold, Guy Donahue, Elsie Whitney and Evelyn Sawin.

Free workshop

LEWISTON – A free workshop series on letting go of fear will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the USM Lewiston/Auburn College, 51-55 Westminster St. Classes will run from Sept. 20 to Oct. 4. LEWISTON – “Look Good … Feel Better,” the American Cancer Society’s program for assisting women who are faced with appearance changes resulting from cancer treatment, will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Central Maine Medical Center’s Sam and Jennie Bennett Breast Care Center, 12 High St., Suite 103.

Planning workshop

LEWISTON – Maine Educational Opportunity Center adviser Christy Le will present an “Essentials of College Planning” workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Lewiston CareerCenter, 5 Mollison Way.

Adults considering college are invited to participate in the free workshop. The center helps adult students to overcome class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education. Services include assistance in choosing a college, tutoring, personal and financial counseling, career counseling, assistance in applying to college, workplace and college visits and assistance in applying for financial aid.

Prostate cancer

LEWISTON – Nelson Leavitt, president of the Maine Coalition to Fight Prostate Cancer and ACS Man to Man Volunteer, in collaboration with St. Mary’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, will present a program on prostate cancer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.

A discussion about the latest recommendations for diagnosis and treatment as well as the controversy around testing, will be offered. The session will be held at the Lepage Conference Center, 99 Campus Ave. A healthy meal will be served for $5. Payment is due in advance. To reserve a seat, call 753-5467 by Friday, Sept. 22.

Bridge results

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on Sept. 12 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners in Flight A were: first, Martine Begert and Mary Leahey; second, David Lock and Jim Flanagan; third, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; fourth, Janet Arey and Nancy Lindgren.

Flight B winners were: first, Richard Balian and Marta Clements; second, Alberta Turner and Lucille Bilodeau. A charity game will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the center.

The club also met on Sept. 13 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. North/south winners in Flight A were: first, Martine Begert and Rosemarie Goodwin; second, Luke Merry and Paul Barber; third, Anita Perrier and Helen Little.

Flight B winners were: first, Anita Perrier and Helen Little; second, Alberta Turner and Lucille Bilodeau.

East/west winners were: first, Mary Leahey and Ann Johnson; second, Leslie Buzzell and Paul Sherman; third, Mike and Pat Quinn. East/west winners were Richard Balian and Marta Clements.

Clinical trial

LEWISTON – The Regional Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center is participating in a breast cancer clinical trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Elena Theodosiou will serve as the principal investigator for the center’s participation.

Theodosiou said, “The purpose of the TAILORx trial is to determine whether we have found a methodology to help us individualize treatment for patients with early breast cancer and avoid unnecessary toxicity

In the trial, all participants will be assigned to a study group based on their RS, which is determined by running tests on a sample of the patient’s tumor after it has been surgically removed.
