RUMFORD – A Rumford Point woman remained hospitalized at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston on Friday with injuries from a car accident on Route 232 earlier this week.

A nursing supervisor said Donna E. Holder, 66, was in fair condition.

“She’s doing a lot better,” Rumford Sgt. David Bean said Friday afternoon of Holder, whose significant other is Bean’s brother-in-law.

Bean said Holder suffered a head injury and several rib fractures when she lost control of her 1997 Chevrolet Blazer on Tuesday morning. She was in the intensive care unit from Tuesday through Thursday, he added.

Bean came on the accident about 8:55 a.m. while returning home from the police station.

Reading from Officer Paul Casey’s report, Bean said it appeared that the the Blazer had drifted to the right side where new pavement is several inches higher than the shoulder. Holder overcorrected, and the sport utility vehicle then crossed the road and flipped several times.

“The roof was crushed in, the sides were all crushed in, and most of the glass was blown right out of it,” Bean said.

Also arriving on scene shortly after the accident were Christine Abbott, 54, of Rumford Point and Salvatore Mazza, 58, of Rumford in another vehicle.

Bean said Abbott climbed inside while Mazza entered the Blazer through the back, both supporting Holder and maintaining traction on her while Bean cut the safety belt.

“They did a great job,” Bean said.

Tri-Town Rescue, Rumford firefighters and Med-Care Ambulance were sent, along with LifeFlight helicopter. It took about 20 minutes to cut her out, Bean said.

The Blazer was totaled.
