WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) – Ron Whitcomb rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as Maine held on to beat William & Mary 20-17 Saturday night.

Whitcomb was 9-for-15 for 98 yards and one interception. He carried the ball 1 yard to put the Black Bears (1-1) up 7-3 in the first quarter. Whitcomb threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Landis Williams in the second, then ran another in 8 yards in the third quarter to put Maine up 20-3.

DeBrian Holmes answered with a 14-yard touchdown run for the Tribe (0-2), and Joe Nicholas caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jake Phillips.

Phillips finished 22-for-43 for 184 yards.

William & Mary had the ball on its own 20-yard line with 1:44 remaining. After three incomplete passes, Phillips connected with Matt Trinkle for five yards, but the Tribe lost it with 1:17 remaining and Maine ran out the clock.
