People in the greater Franklin County area and beyond will have a chance to get rid of some of their nasty household wastes including paints, poisons and pesticides on Saturday, Sept. 30 at collection sites in Jay and Wilton.
The Jay collection will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Jay Transfer Station on Route 4 in North Jay.
The Wilton collection will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Wilton Transfer Station on Munson Road, located across from the Big Apple Store off routes 2/4.
Residents of Rangeley, Temple, Carthage, Phillips, Farmington, Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Wilton, Byron, Dixfield, Hanover, Rumford, Mexico are among those eligible to participate.
Residents of the towns are encouraged to get vouchers from their town offices before going to dispose of hazardous waste, Susan Martin, administrative secretary of Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments’ Planning Division, said Thursday.
The voucher will allow for the disposal of up to 10 gallons of liquid or 40 pounds of dry waste or a combination of liquid and dry waste at no cost to the resident, if their town is participating in the program.
If people have more waste than that or want to know if their town is a participant in the AVCOG program, they should contact their town office.
“It’s a great time to get rid of all that nasty stuff hanging around in people’s houses,” Martin said. “A lot of people don’t want to throw it away. They want to be environmentally friendly and this is the way to do it.”
Residents are asked to bring their hazardous wastes to the event in original containers, if possible, Martin said.
Leaking containers can be placed in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.
For residents of towns not participating, the cost is $26 per every 5 gallons of liquid waste or 20 pounds of dry waste or combination.
Wastes accepted include oil-based paints, varnishes, lacquers, paint thinners, pesticides, old gasoline and contaminated waste oil, old pool chemicals, and nearly anything that has the words “caution, warning, poison, corrosive, toxic, volatile, flammable or danger” on the label, according to AVCOG’s press release.
Not accepted are latex paint, ammunition, explosives or smoke detectors.
People can contact AVCOG at 783-9186 or visit www.avcog.org under Household Hazardous Waste, information for residents.
AVCOG has been holding annual hazardous waste collections since 1995, Martin said, and usually they’ve been in the fall.
Last year, a permanent site was built in Lewiston, which is open from 8 a.m. to noon from April through November on the first and third Saturdays of the month excluding holiday weekends, Martin said.
There will be another collection for participating towns from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the SAD 44 bus barn in Bethel, which is located on the corner of Main and Cross streets near the railroad, she said.
