Cancer program
AUBURN – Authors and certified sex counselors Ralph and Barbara Alterowitz will discuss “Regaining Intimacy After Cancer: The Lovin’ Ain’t Over!” at a presentation set for Wednesday, Sept. 27.
The couple restored their intimacy after Ralph’s treatment for prostate cancer. They captured the experience in their books, “The Lovin’ Ain’t Over: The Couples’ Guide to Sex After Prostate Cancer” and “Intimacy with Impotence.”
They have since become known as informative and entertaining speakers who address the topic of sexuality with comfort, respect and humor.
The talk will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A dessert buffet will be included.
The event is free to cancer survivors, their partners/spouses and caregivers, but preregistration by Tuesday, Sept. 26, is required. Call Kerry Irish at 795-7118 to register. The program is being sponsored by the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Grange to install
AUBURN – Members of Danville Junction Grange will meet on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the hall for a 6 p.m. supper. Guests at the 7 p.m. meeting will be state Steward Patrick Brewer and his installing team, who will install the officers of Danville Junction Grange for the following year. All members and guests are invited.
Life chain
LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Life Chain will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, when local pro-lifers will line the sidewalks along both sides of the Longley Bridge and pray for an end to abortion as they hold signs.
Every year, hundreds of cities and towns across the United States and Canada hold the Life Chain. This will be Lewiston-Auburn’s 13th annual event. Children under close supervision are welcome, and chairs may be brought for the elderly or handicapped.
Those interested should gather at Great Falls Plaza at 2 p.m. to pick up a poster. For more information, call 782-7721.
Art Club speaker
AUBURN – The Auburn Art Club’s first meeting of the year, to be held Monday, Oct. 2, will feature a presentation by Auburn architect, Bill Hamilton.
His topic will be “The Art of Set Design.” Hamilton has designed more than 25 Community Little Theatre stage sets, including the recent summer production, “Mame.” With set models and photographs, Hamilton will demonstrate how he works with the story and actors to create an artistic set.
The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. at the High Street Congregational Church, UCC, 106 Pleasant St., Auburn. Committee members for the meeting are Margaret Bunker, Patricia Lepage and Sarah Andersen, chairwoman.
Film screening
AUBURN – The First Universalist Church of Auburn will host a free screening of “An Inconvenient Truth” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3. The documentary offers an inspirational look at Al Gore’s crusade to halt global warming by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it.
Local experts will hold a discussion after the film. Admission is free, although freewill donations will be accepted. The event is open to the public at 169 Pleasant St., across from the Dairy Joy. For more information, contact 783-0461 or [email protected].
Fall bazaar
SABATTUS – A fall bazaar, to benefit the local food pantry and Loaves and Fishes, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, at the Dominican Convent, 61 Lisbon Road. There will be Christmas items, baked goods, crafts, books, a 50/50 raffle and a raffle for hot air balloon rides. For more information, call Sister Lucille Fournier at 375-8399. Pizza fundraiser
SABATTUS – A pizza fundraiser will be held on Oct. 21 at the Dominican Convent, 61 Lisbon Road. Ready-to-cook pizza with cheese or pepperoni will be available for $6 each. To order, call Pauline Pierre at 777-7169 or 713-5685. Payment is due when orders are placed. Order deadline is Oct. 5 and pick-up is between noon and 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the convent. Proceeds will go to Loaves and Fishes and the food pantry.
Kids’ ID program
MECHANIC FALLS – The Masons of the Tyrian Masonic Lodge 73 will provide a free child identification program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Poland Community Day celebration.
The program will provide parents with an opportunity to receive a videotape of the child, along with their fingerprints, which can be used to distribute to the media and law enforcement officials should their child become missing.
The child ID program is sponsored by contributions from the Freemasons of Maine. The program is free to the public, and all identifying items generated by the program are given to the child’s family. A parent or guardian will need to be present to sign a release.

Bridge play
LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on Sept. 19 at the Multi-Purpose Center.
Winners in Flight A were: first, Mike Quinn and Luke Merry; second, Jim Flanagan and David Lock; third, Jeanine Kivus and Martine Begert; fourth, Fred Letourneau and Rosemarie Goodwin; tied at fifth, Shirley West and Pat Smith with Nancy Lindgren and Mary Leahey.
Flight B winners were: first, Anita Perrier and Helen Little; second, Charlie Bartlett and Roger Briggs. A club championship game will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the center.
The club also met on Sept. 20 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Flight A winners were: first, Anna Vitiello and Lucille Theriault; second, Mike and Pat Quinn; third, Larry Fortier and Richard Fortier; fourth, Jeanine Kivus and Rosemarie Goodwin; fifth, David Lock and Martine Begert.
