Improvox coming to Farmington

FARMINGTON – Imagine singing any note that comes into your head just for fun. Imagine being part of an orchestra of voices. Imagine spending an afternoon making friends, trying new things and exploring your creativity.

An Improvox workshop will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, 110 Academy St. The workshop will be led by the vocal group Improvox.

Anyone can join in the experience. Simple tones, beats, intricate musical patterns, large and small ensemble exploration, back-up harmonies and soaring solos are equally valued and integrated into Improvox workshops.

The members of Improvox are Ellen Bowman, Deb Hensley, Kathy Slack, Fred White and Martin Swinger. White is a clinical psychologist who advocates singing as a healing activity. Hensley is an early childhood consultant who teaches the value of music in literacy development.

Slack is a vocalist, humorist and teacher of communication and public speaking seeking to develop community with fellow musical souls. Bowman is a music therapist focusing on musical communication and Swinger is a music educator teaching songwriting to elementary and middle school students.

They each bring their professional talents to play as they create on-the-spot “songs” inspired by literature, art and social or political events.

Participation is limited to 30 people age 18 and up. There will be a $15 fee collected that day. To reserve a space, e-mail [email protected] or write the Arts Institute of Western Maine at P.O. Box 821, Wilton, ME 04294. The Arts Institute of Western Maine is affiliated with the University of Maine at Farmington.
