LIVERMORE FALLS – If the Livermore Falls boys’ soccer team had any jitters about facing MVC power Georges Valley on Wednesday, the Buccaneers wasted little time in taking advantage.
Georges Valley forward Elisha Sprague drew a foul on a shoulder charge in the penalty box in the fourth minute of the game, and converted on his penalty kick to give the Buccaneers the early lead.
“It’s not the way you want to start a game. We tried to get come out strong, and we were moving the ball well,” said Livermore Falls coach Larry Thornton. “Right away, they got the penalty kick, and it was an uphill battle from there.”
Georges Valley (9-1) didn’t relinquish the momentum either, adding three more scores to earn a 4-0 decision over the Andies.
Despite the crooked number on the scoreboard, the Andies improvement this season was not lost on Buccaneers coach Sam Pendleton.
“That is probably the best team that Livermore Falls has put on the field against us. They should be proud of the way they played today,” said Pendleton.
Sprague finished with a pair of goals, and Angel Olivares added two more scores and an assist for Georges Valley. The chemistry between the two Buccaneer forwards was a big factor in the offensive effort, with the creative passing and sharp dribbling of the duo causing problems for the Andies’ back line throughout the game.
“Elisha is a great player. He knows what he is doing,” said Olivares. “We don’t care so much about scoring goals. We just try to do what we can to help the team, and to do our best.”
“The two of them can put together some pretty sweet stuff out there,” said Pendleton.
The two connected for Georges Valley’s second goal with 12 minutes ticked off the clock in the first half. Sprague sprung Olivares with a well-placed through-ball to get behind the defense, but a slide-tackle by fullback Garrett Therrien broke up his shot attempt. Olivares went back to the loose ball and struck it to the lower left corner past Livermore Falls keeper Marcus Ryder to make it 2-0.
Georges Valley went up 3-0 before the half on a similar play. Sprague threaded a pass to James Lewis. The play was broken up by Andies’ sweeper Jake Marceau, but the ball caromed back to Olivares, who lifted a soft shot to the roof of the cage.
Sprague scored the final goal of the game with 35:49 remaining in the second half, punching in the ball as he was sliding down after Olivares corralled the ball on a clear attempt.
Livermore Falls played the ball well in its own zone, and had some success moving the ball through the midfield, but simply could not move the ball to the front of the cage to create scoring opportunities. Georges Valley held a 24-4 advantage in shots.
“At halftime we knew that we needed to keep working to move the ball forward,” said Thornton. “We didn’t make good traps, and we didn’t make good passes, and if you don’t do that, its hard to move the ball down offensively.”
