MEXICO – At the tail end of Wednesday night’s meeting, selectmen banned the posting of political signs on hallowed town ground.

Town Clerk Penny Duguay stridently asked the board to stand firm when dealing with political candidates who want to post signs on the Veterans Memorial Green.

Traffic crossing NewPage Corp. paper mill property from Route 108 in Rumford on Railroad Street crosses Veterans Bridge over the Androscoggin River to Route 2 in Mexico opposite the green.

Selectman Peter Merrill did most of the board’s talking on the matter, saying in his opinion, candidates could place their signs anywhere else in town other than the memorial green.

That’s when Duguay asked them to be more specific, because there were smaller greens in town.

Selectman George Byam then motioned to not allow any political signs on the greens – plural. Byam then sought Town Manager John Madigan’s opinion.

“They’re all over the place this time of year. It’s up to you,” Madigan said of candidates’ signage.

Selectmen voted 3-0 to OK Byam’s motion. Selectman Reggie Arsenault, who is also seeking a state representative seat, abstained.

In other business, selectmen dedicated the town gazebo to past, present and future volunteers of Mexico.

They gave Matt Gallant permission to conduct a “toll road” fundraiser on Main Street opposite the car wash business to raise money for the Mexico Recreation Park.
