I intended to write about financial mismanagement by Democrats in the legislature, but something is more important: war in the Middle East.

Islamic extremists attacked us on 9/11 without provocation. We did not start this war. We have taken the war to their territory. The problem is prominent politicians, aided by a liberal press, criticizing the war for political gain. This encourages our enemies and decreases morale of our armed forces.

Undermining leadership in wartime aids the enemy. We have the right to free speech, but the loudest critics voted for the war. One must conclude they are weak on defense, or are catering to a public that wants instant success without needed sacrifices.

These critics fail to offer solutions on winning this conflict. Many want to cut and run, which would embolden terrorists and lead to more bombing and killing in the United States.

There are many issues opponents of the Bush administration can use for political purposes, like illegal immigration, insecure borders, budget deficits, or mismanagement of Hurricane Katrina relief. I could join them on some of these issues.

But nations should be like family, where outsiders can’t stick their noses into disagreements without the argument turning on them. This is now not the case, as those who oppose the war for political gain have demonstrated disloyalty to the United States. We are Americans first and political party members second.

Thank God the majority of our forefathers had the moral courage to face the tough issues.

Rep. Thomas F. Shields, Auburn
