PORTLAND (AP) – From fighting cancer to honoring combat casualties, hundreds of runners and walkers gathered Sunday to take part in the 15th Sportshoe Center Maine Marathon and Half Marathon.

Organizers said some 2,400 entrants registered, with a field including 50 relay teams.

The Sportshoe Center Maine Marathon is certified by USA Track & Field, which makes it a qualifier race for the Boston Marathon.

Among the participants were scores of Maine National Guard personnel.
