GREENE – Marguerite M. Randolph, 87, a resident of Wilkins Road in Greene, died peacefully at home Saturday morning, Sept. 30, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Rumford, the daughter of Michael and Hazel (Marcue) Melanson.

She lived in Strong with her family and graduated from Strong High School at the young age of sixteen. Marguerite earned a B.S. degree from Farmington Normal School, and later earned her master’s degree from the University of Maine.

Soon after graduating from college, Marguerite decided to take a journey to Europe with a close missionary family. After setting sail for their destination of South Hampton, their course was changed several times due to war danger and finally diverted to Columbo, Ceylon. They decided to take a barge to India. She was fortunate to be offered a teaching job at Woodstock, an American Missionary School in India.

On Dec. 7, 1940, in a storybook formal wedding, she married Frank C. Randolph, a British police officer stationed in Hymalyn Hills of India.

Marguerite and Frank remained in India with their two young boys until 1946, when they decided it was not safe to stay in India and traveled back to America. She resumed her teaching profession in the United States.

Over the next 20 years, she progressed from teaching in a one room school in Leeds, to her retirement as director of guidance in the Lewiston school system. She was a member of the M.T.A., N.T.A. and the Retired Teachers’ Association.

After she and her husband, Frank, retired from teaching, they enjoyed over 25 happy years of active retirement in St. Augustine, Florida. They made many close friends and were very active in their communities, St. Augustine Shores, Willow Walk and Coquina Crossing. In 2003, ill health forced them to return to Greene to be close to family.

She was a delight to talk with, telling of the adventures she and her husband experienced with their children. You could hear the love in her voice as she reminisced. She was always concerned about others first and herself second, even in the last months of failing health.

She was proud of her family and thankful for all her blessings. She was thankful for the doctors and nurses who helped care for her in her time of need, especially caregivers, Vicki, Jennifer and Alice.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard and his wife, Esther, of Greene, and Michael and his wife, Cecile, also of Greene; six grandchildren, Wanda Michaud, Sandra Laliberte, Carol Dickinson, John Randolph, Christina Crosby and Cheryl Parmenter; and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Child, and her husband, Norman, of Brigham City, Utah; two sister-in-laws, Margret Bazley and Vi Randolph, both of England; and several nieces and nephews in both Utah and England.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in April of 2005.
