I don’t always agree with the opinions expressed by Leonard Pitts Jr. However, I must applaud his column on the pope’s remarks and the Muslim reaction.

Yes, probably his choice of words was unwise, but the pope’s point is unassailable. I agree that true religion and violence are mutually exclusive, according to the teaching and example of Jesus. To our shame, we Christians have not always lived up to that standard. That being said, there’s still a stark contrast between the Christian and Muslim approaches to controversy.

As long as the majority of Muslims reflexively react to every perceived insult with threats and violence, the world will have no inclination to embrace them or their religion. When will they learn that genuine faith is a matter of individual conscience, and it cannot be coerced?

Pitts showed real courage in speaking frankly and openly about the matter, given the penchant of many Muslims for retaliation. He deserves credit.
