FRYEBURG – Two-time defending Women’s Champion Nancy Zalewski of Plymouth, Wisc., set a new record in the Ax Throw while Brian Cox of Peru established a new record in the Cable Skidder competition during Monday’s 39th annual Saco Valley Woodmen’s Field Day at Fryeburg Fair.

Zalewski scored a 24 out of a possible 25 to beat the Ax Throw record of 22 set last year. She went on to win the Women’s Underhand Chop and finish second in the Bucksaw and Crosscut contests on her way to her third straight overall championship.

Cox’s time of one minute and 1.84 seconds beat the 2002 cable skidder record of 1:3.3.

Jerry Gingras of Errol, N.H., won Champion Woodsman’s honor while the Master’s Championship went to Deerfield, Ohio’s Rudy Dettmer, who tied for top honors last year.

Heath Taylor of Cornish was awarded the Champion Logger trophy while Brian Winn of Effingham, N.H., was the day’s Champion Trucker.

A total of 98 competitors competed in the daylong event.
