FARMINGTON – A fire heavily damaged a used-car dealership and totaled a dump truck inside a garage bay Friday in Farmington Falls after a spark from a grinder ignited gas fumes and caught the building on fire.
About 25 firefighters from Farmington, Temple, Chesterville and New Sharon and 10 trucks responded to the fire at JR’s Used Cars at 645 Farmington Falls Road.
“They were grinding a dump truck in the back bay and evidently one of the sparks ignited some gas fumes and ignited the building,” Farmington Fire Rescue Chief Terry Bell said Friday.
No one was injured, he said.
Billowing gray smoke was showing from the two garage bays and the front portion of the building.
Flames were coming out the overhead door in the back bay.
Firefighters shuttled water from a hydrant near Farmington Motel and Western Mountains Cremation and Funeral Service to the site.
Sylvia Cook, girlfriend of business owner Ralph Searles Jr., was comforted by family and friends after she left the mobile home the couple lives in located behind the dealership.
Bell’s rough estimate of damage to the building was $30,000 and the dump truck was totaled, he said.
