JAY – It could almost have been a scene from CSI.

When the Jay Police Department was notified this weekend that nearly $500 worth of alcohol had been stolen from the Hillside Sports Club on Cross Street, officers pulled on their gloves and got down to work.

They took DNA samples. They found fingerprints. They did tests they can’t make public until they’ve made their arrests.

By Tuesday afternoon, most of the stolen liquor had been recovered, Jay Police Chief Larry White said. “However,” he added, “a substantial amount of it had been consumed.”

Investigating Officers Richard Caton and Troy Young had also found the names of the suspected thieves, and were busy tracking them down Tuesday.

“We are actively seeking at least two suspects and a third person who might be charged for receiving stolen property,” White said.

The burglary happened in the very early hours of Saturday morning, White said. It occurred sometime after closing, he said. “Entry was gained by breaking a window,” he added.

The pursuit of the case so far pleased Hillside manager Anna Mitchell, who was working at the bar Tuesday.

“They’ve been on it,” she said.
