WASHINGTON (AP) – The federal government finished the budget year with a $56 billion surplus in September, the third highest on record for the month, the Treasury Department said Thursday.
The department said the huge surplus reflected a surge in quarterly tax payments by businesses and individuals. Both receipts and outlays set records for the month.
The September surplus helped the government finish the year with a $247.7 billion deficit, the smallest in four years.
