LEWISTON – Central Maine Medical Center will host the Women’s Health Expo, an event for women of all ages, on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The daylong event will feature speakers and demonstrations on a variety of topics, as well as product and service displays and health screenings.

On-site registration for the event will be held in the 12 High Street Medical Office Building lobby adjacent to CMMC beginning at 8 a.m. The activities will be held at various sites on the CMMC campus. A program of the day’s activities and directions to individual locations will be provided at the time of registration.

Parking will be provided at no charge in the CMMC High Street parking garage and parking lots, located across the street from the 12 High Street entrance.

There will be no charge for participation.

The speakers’ program will include the following morning presentations:

“Broken Heart Syndrome” with Dr. Dervilla M. McCann, cardiologist; “Chest Pain and Women” with Dr. Tari A. Avani, emergency physician; “Chronic Headaches: What Causes Them and What to Do About Them” with Dr. Daniel R. Lalonde, neurologist and pain medicine specialist; “Empowering Your Health” with Dr. Jamie Loggins, general surgeon.

Also, “Impact of Diabetes in Female Urology and Sexual Function” with Dr. Ted M. Roth, urogynecologist; “Healthy Relationships” with Kelley Glidden, Abused Women’s Advocacy Project; “Injury Prevention In the Female Athlete” with Dr. Paul R. Cain, orthopedic surgeon.

Also, “Keeping Your Man Healthy: What Women Need to Know about Prostate Health” with Dr. Michael L. Parker, urologist; “Mom, Do I Need Braces?” with Lawrence E. Levy, DMD, orthodontist; “Pondering Parenthood?” with Suzy Zimmerman, RN.

Also, “Protecting You and Your Children from Old Man Winter: Prevention from Cold Injury” with Dr. Evie Marcolini and Paul Marcolini; “Selling Us Something? Or Selling Us Out? A Critical Look at Today’s Popular Magazines and Their Portrayal of Women” with Jackie Dupont of Hardy Girls Healthy Women.

Also, “Starting Now: Understand the Facts and Figures of Stroke” with Wanda Clements, manager of the Central Maine Rehabilitation Center; “Wellness – The Whole Person” with Barbara Williams, RN; “Women’s Self-Protection and Empowerment” with Rich Pelletier, Pelletier’s Karata-Do.

Afternoon presentations will include the following: “Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for Disease Prevention” with Sally Van Snepson, physician assistant; “Caring for Your Aging Parent” with Laurie Windsor and Pat O’Brien, RN, from Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice.

Also, “HPV” with a representative from Central Maine Obstetrics-Gynecology; “Putting Your Gardens to Bed” with Jody Goodwin; “Stress Reduction” with Valerie St. Clair, RN.

The following morning demonstrations will be presented: “Greek Cooking for Heart Health” with Joe Thornton, CMMC Food Service; “Guiding Stars Nutritional Program” with Beth Williams, registered dietitian, from Hannaford Supermarkets.

Afternoon demonstrations: “Low Carbohydrate Cooking” with Sharon Kuhrt, director, CMMC School of Nursing; “Preparing Your Car for Winter” with a representative from VIP Discount Auto Center; “SelfDefense for Women” with Rich Pelletier, Pelletiers Karata-Do; “Stamping Up – Artistic Rubber Stamping” with Kathy Bourgault; yoga with Marcy Covey, certified yoga instructor.

All-day demonstrations include chair massages with Tina Anctil and Kelly Harrington; “CPR and Acute Ischemic Stroke: Recognizing Symptoms and Knowing What To Do Saves Lives” with Carmen Hetherington, RN, and Peggy McRae, RN; spa room with facials, presented by Cloud 9 Day Spa.

Other demonstrations will include belly dancing, line dancing, tai chi and thai yoga.

Exhibits will be presented by the following organizations: American Heart Association; American Red Cross; Arbonne International; Bedard Medical Inc.; Central Maine Medical Center; Community Care; Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, PA; Cote Bros. Sewing Machines; Curves; Davis Chiropractic.

Also, Facing Change, PA; Foot-o-Pedics; Gagne and Associates Nationwide Insurance; Hannaford Supermarkets; Health Club and Spa; Lewiston Fire Department; Lewiston Police Department; Maine Cancer Foundation; Marshwood Center for Healthcare and Rehabilitation; Modern Woodmen of America; NeuroRehabilitation Services at Goodwill.

Also, Overeaters Anonymous; Pfizer Pharmaceutical; RiverWalk Creations; Silpada Designs; State Farm Insurance; Ste. Croix Regional Federal Credit Union; the Clothes Horse; the Medicine Shoppe; and Tri-County Mental Health Services.

The following health screening services will be provided: balance checks; blood pressure checks; body fat/body mass index/range of motion; cholesterol; EKGs; hand-washing demonstration; hearing; osteoporosis; pulmonary function tests; ScoreKeeper Health Risk Assessment; vascular function; and vision.

An Apple iPod Nano will be given away through a drawing from those who register for the event. Refreshments and various give-aways will also be provided.
