LEWISTON – Three people were hospitalized Thursday night after a pair of vehicles collided at Lisbon and Chestnut streets, sending a sport utility vehicle crashing through the front of a store.
Police said Lorraine Toplin, 43, of Lewiston, an unidentified teenage girl and a 10-year-old boy, were injured when the Chevrolet Blazer Toplin was driving was was struck at the intersection at about 9:15 p.m.
Witnesses said a Hyundai sedan was driving up Lisbon Street when it slammed into the side of the Blazer as it was driven down Chestnut.
“I heard a screech, a big bang and then a lot of glass breaking,” said Norm Giguere, who was in a nearby building when the vehicles collided.
The driver of the Hyundai, 19-year-old Diego Pirela of South Paris, was out of his car and walking around the crash scene when police arrived. The woman and the 17-year-old girl in the Blazer had to be extricated from that vehicle after it crashed through the front of a store at 274 Lisbon St.
A 10-year-old boy also riding in the Blazer was examined at the scene and then taken to Central Maine Medical Center as a precaution, police said. Toplin and teenager from the front seat were also being treated at the hospital later Thursday night. None of the Blazer occupants was believed to be seriously injured.
“They’ve got a lot of bumps and bruises, but it looks like they’re going to be okay,” said police Lt. James Minkowsky.
Police closed a section of Lisbon Street as rescue crews responded to the crash and an investigation got under way. Lewiston police were calling for a reconstruction team from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department to assist with the investigation.
Several witnesses said the driver of the Hyundai was speeding through the intersection when the vehicles crashed. Police late Thursday said they were waiting for results of the reconstruction before commenting on those reports.
