Worship leader
PARIS – The Rev. Dr. Robert Sallies will be the worship leader at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris, on Sunday, Oct. 22. The church will celebrate Reunion Sunday at the 10 a.m. service.
Music will be by the choir and church musicians with Forest Perkins as organist. Renee Wales will lead the Sunday School. Child care is provided. The coffee hour will follow in Good Cheer Hall. Everyone is welcome. The choir rehearses every Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Book group
WATERFORD – The Waterford Library monthly book discussion group will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 25, to discuss “Cry the Beloved Country” by Alan Paton. All are welcome.
First published in 1948, “Cry the Beloved Country” is the story of Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom, set in the South Africa of the 1940s.
The title the group has chosen for Nov. 15 “The Tortilla Curtain” by T.C. Boyle. The book follows two couples in southern California, one a pair of wealthy suburbanites, the other illegal immigrants from Mexico.
Tai chi class
WOODSTOCK – A tai chi class will be offered at the Whitman Memorial Library at 4:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, Oct. 26. Nancy Willard will lead the exercise for old and young alike. The program is open to all free.
Church supper
HARTFORD – The Hartford Community Church will hold a potluck supper and auction from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Hartford Town Hall, Route 140. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children 10 and under, free for children 5 and under.
Menu will include entrees, salads, bread/rolls, cake and vanilla ice cream for dessert. The supper will be followed by an auction. Proceeds will benefit the Hartford Community Church.
Hunter’s breakfast
BUCKFIELD – There will be a hunter’s breakfast from 5 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the American Legion Home. Menu will include eggs, bacon, sausage, homefries, beans, homemade doughnuts, toast, coffee and juice. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. It is sponsored by John D. Long Post 58.
Hunter’s meal
OXFORD – A hunter’s breakfast will be served from 4:30 to 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Lake Thompson Fish and Game Club, Paine Road. The menu will include pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, fried potatoes, toast, juice and coffee. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
PTA craft fair
WOODSTOCK – The Woodstock PTA’s annual craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Woodstock Elementary School. For more information, contact Missy Wakefield or Staci Millett at 665-2227.
Haunted house
NORWAY – Norway Rehab and Living Center, 29 Marion Ave., will have trick or treating and a haunted house from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, for children age 11 and under. There is no admission. For more information, contact Georgia Cram at 743-7075.
OES meeting
NORWAY – Grand Family Night was observed at a special meeting of the Oxford Chapter 168, OES, on Oct. 9.
The 2006 Grand Family conferred the degrees on two candidates from Mt. Zircon Chapter 142 with 112 members in attendance.
Oxford Chapter hosted the meeting and District 5 member helped with the special night, which included a potluck supper.
Political meeting
HARRISON – Politicians running for office on the November ballot or their representatives will attend a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the VFW Hall, Route 35, for discussion of the ballot questions. Basket bingo
OXFORD – A Longaberger basket bingo will be held Sunday, Oct. 29, at Oxford Legion Hall, junction of Route 121 and Skeetfield Road. Doors will open at 11 a.m., bingo will begin at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Responsible Pet Care Shelter in Norway. Cost for tickets is $10.
