Women, woodlots
SOUTH CHINA – Working with forestry professionals and working a woodlot will be of the topics at the upcoming Woman and the Woods Program’s “kitchen table” meeting. Susan Cottle will host a woods walk in her woodland from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29.
Patty Cormier, district forester with the Maine Forest Service, will provide the training and answer questions on working with forestry professionals and working a woodlot.
The workshop is sponsored by University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Women’s Agricultural Network and the Maine Forest Service.

Maine day at Colby
WATERVILLE – Colby College will hold its annual Maine Event – a day for Maine high school students and their families to become familiar with the college – on Monday, Oct. 23. Trees vandalized
AUGUSTA – For the fourth time in as many years, trees at the Pine Tree State Arboretum have been damaged. The eastern white pines, unique because they were grown from seed that flew aboard the space shuttle “Atlantis,” were attacked by someone intent on inflicting lasting, and in many cases, fatal, damage.
The most recent incident occurred on Oct. 17. A similar attack occurred at about the same time last year and was followed a few weeks later by a second event. The incidents were virtually identical to an attack that occurred three years previously.
Anyone with information about the attack is urged to call the Pine Tree State Arboretum at 62-0031 or the Augusta police.
Navy League
BATH – The Navy League of United States Casco Bay Council will host Captain Dean Krestos, USN, on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Bounty Restaurant and Taverne, Bath Holiday Inn, 139 Richardson St. A social hour at 6 p.m. will be followed by a buffet dinner at 7.

Health conference
AUGUSTA – A daylong conference for public health professionals will take place on Monday, Oct. 30, at the Augusta Civic Center. The conference, “Where Is Maine’s Public Health? Can We Be No. 1.and How?,” is the 22nd annual meeting of the Maine Public Health Association.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Paul Jarris, executive director for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. Participants will learn where Maine and the U.S. compare in public health preparedness, discuss potential solutions for Maine and have the opportunity to network with other public health professionals.
Individual and program award winners will be recognized during lunch. A scholarship will be awarded for the first time to students pursuing graduate studies in public health.
Registration fees are $35 for members, $50 for nonmembers and $25 for students and retirees. An additional $15 will be charged for same-day registration. Cost includes break refreshments and lunch.
