Stefan Chaput is snakebitten no more.
Chaput scored his first goal of the season and rookie Peter Delmas made 24 saves to earn his second win in as many starts to lead the Lewiston Maineiacs to a 6-3 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs at Harbour Station on Sunday afternoon.
The win is the fourth in five games for the Maineiacs (8-3-0-1), the other was a shootout loss for which the team earned one point.
For Chaput, the goal ended the longest goal drought of his young career. He was one of four Maineiacs with three points against Saint John, joining Chad Denny, Stefano Giliati and Marc-Andre Cliche.
“It’s a team game, and we emphasize team play,” said Maineiacs’ assistant coach Jeff Guay. “It’s nice to see that we’re not relying on just one or two players to do our scoring. When everyone is working, we have a handful of guys that can score.”
Delmas, meanwhile, remained perfect in his two starts, allowing three goals on 27 shots in the win. Delmas is now 2-0 and has allowed just six goals on 65 shots.
“To be honest, he was shaky in the first period, flopping around a bit too much,” said Guay, “but he got a little better in the second, and by the third period he calmed down a bit and did a better job.”
Lewiston started slowly, but back-to-back goals from Chaput and Cliche just 45 seconds apart in the middle of the period changed that. Delmas added to the momentum at 12:37 of the opening frame when he stopped Ryan Sparling on a penalty shot.
The Sea Dogs rallied at the end of the period with two quick goals to knot the score, but the Maineiacs responded with three more in the second period to put the game out of reach.
“We were a little disappointed that we allowed them back into the game after being ahead 2-0 on the road,” said Guay. “When you’re up by two you have to protect the lead, but after we got that first one in the third, we broke the momentum they had built.”
Rookie David Perron notched his team-leading eighth goal 16 seconds after Bruce Crawford had pulled Saint John within two again in the third to cap the scoring.
Three of the Maineiacs’ six goals came on the power play, a discipline the team had been struggling with.
“The puck was moving well,” said Guay. “When the puck is on the forehand and on the tape, it opens things up and creates opportunities.”
Lewiston plays its next game Wednesday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee against the Victoriaville Tigres. The team then embarks on a six-game, nine-day road trip, its second of the season, beginning with a pair of games in St. John’s, Newfoundland on Saturday and Sunday.
