NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A 52-year-old city man has been charged with making a false police report about finding a baby abandoned on his doorstep.

Michael Robinson has been arrested and accused of making up the story of finding a baby in a stroller outside his house in April.

Police now believe that the baby’s mother left the child with him and, for whatever reason, Robinson claimed to have found the baby.

Sharonda Washington, the mother, had claimed that she didn’t abandon the child. She said Monday she had known Robinson for a few years and paid him to baby-sit that night while she attended to something “personal.”

Washington said she hopes to get her child back from Department of Children and Families’ custody. The boy, now 9 months old, is staying with her cousin, she said.
