Early Sunday morning, “Eddie” Atherton of Pleasant street, Auburn, in company with two companions started on the seven o’clock car for Sabattus for a day in the woods.

Everything was fine and the boys had a good day’s sport until in the afternoon when the accident occurred.

Young Atherton was resting the muzzle of his rifle on his right foot when the gun was accidentally discharged, the bullet penetrating the foot breaking the bones and causing a ragged wound.

When the accident happened the party were nearly a mile from Sabattus village and Eddie had to walk to the car, with the help of his friends.

50 Years Ago, 1956

• A new Northeast Airlines flight out of the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport will go into effect Sunday, it was announced yesterday. Scheduled to depart daily, including Sundays, the flight will leave the Twin Cities at 6:53 p.m. and arrive at Boston non-stop at 7:48 p.m. An outbound flight for Boston at 8:15 p.m. will put the passenger in New York at 9:23 p.m.

• WASHINGTON – The nation’s living costs hit a new high in mid-September, the government announced today. This stirred up new campaign arguments over the well-being of the people. President Eisenhower, taking note of the rise reported by the Labor Department, called attention to another department finding that take-home pay of the average factory worker also is at a record level. There are about 17 million factory workers, out of a total of 66 million persons employed in the country.

25 Years Ago, 1981

A study prepared for Congress on the impact of forthcoming technology asks: When computers can accurately predict who is most likely to commit crimes, should society closely watch those people? Deny them jobs? Jail them?

The study, published Monday by the Office of Technology Assessment, said computer technology already in use and advances on the horizon raise a host of similar questions that must be answered soon.
