LITCHFIELD – The Board of Selectmen has endorsed the Taxpayer Bill of Rights referendum and urges residents of Litchfield to vote for it.
The board feels that TABOR, though not a perfect solution, is the best chance to put state government back on track, Selectman Mark Russell said in a prepared statement.
“We do not feel, as others do, that TABOR will dramatically affect Litchfield’s ability to have effective local government,” Russell said. “The residents will continue to determine what is best for Litchfield. The most dramatic effect will be on how the state operates. If TABOR passes, the newly elected officials will be forced to listen to the voters.”
Maine voters have been clear about their desire for comprehensive tax reform and prudent government spending in order to spur economic growth, Russell said. “In spite of this, the powers that be in Augusta refuse to take the citizens seriously.”
He added that selectmen were saddened by the need for such a referendum.
“Our elected officials have let us down and when that happens, the people feel the need to take action,” Russell said.
