WINTHROP – Margery Hunter Charleston, 82, died Oct. 30 at Heritage House.
She was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Westbrook, daughter of Albert and Mary Lyle (Bryden) Hunter.
She graduated from Westbrook High School in 1942 and married Norman E. Charleston in 1944, living all her life in Westbrook until moving to Windham in 1982. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994, and he died Dec. 11, 1999.
She worked 10 years parttime at S.D. Warren and then worked as a secretary to the principal of Westbrook High School for 21 years, retiring in 1982. She did a lot of traveling during the 1970s and 1980s and drove across the United States twice.
She was a member of the Westbrook-Warren Church most of her life and its choir, transferring to the North Windham United Church of Christ and its choir in 1992.
She was a charter member of the Westbrook Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered in the hospital since retirement. She also volunteered at the Windham Library, Manchester school, and sang in the “Generations” Group in Windham. She was active in square dancing for many years and was an avid knitter and enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle and other card games. She loved doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble.
Survivors include a son, Norman E. Charleston Jr., and wife, Marie, of Rumford; two daughters, Darlene J. Wintle, and husband, Paul, of Pittsfield and Jolene Paradis of Lewiston; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
