PORTLAND – Donna Cassidy, author of “Marsden Hartley: Race, Region and Nation” (University Press of New England, 2005), will give a lecture at the University of Southern Maine on “Making Geography Trivial: Marsden Hartley, Provence and Transatlantic Modernism.” The free public lecture and reception will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, on the seventh floor of USM’s Glickman Family Library.
Cassidy, whose research looks at American artists working in Europe during the early 20th century between the two world wars, will discuss whether Hartley’s place as a member of the international avant-garde, and as a painter from Maine, are distinct identities. She is USM’s 2005-2006 Trustee Professor.
