RUMFORD – Rumford police are out one cruiser, but not the officer who crashed it into a tree off Route 232 in Woodstock this week.

After dropping off a prisoner at Oxford County Jail in Paris on Sunday, Patrolman Peter Casey was returning to Rumford when he lost control of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala at 2:20 a.m. while traveling through a series of S-turns near Gore Road, Detective Lt. Mark Cayer said late Wednesday afternoon.

“There is no indication of wrongdoing,” Cayer said.

State Police Trooper Kyle Tilsley, who is investigating the accident, was not working Wednesday night and couldn’t be reached for comment.

Cayer said Casey complained of minor pain and stiff muscles, but did not require treatment at the scene.

Cayer referred further comment about the matter to police Chief Stacy Carter, who is away this week on vacation. He said the accident may have been caused by heavy equipment in the car’s rear end that shifted, causing Casey to lose control.

“Impalas are known for light rear ends,” Cayer said.

The cruiser, which sustained at least $2,500 damage, was not drivable because the radiator was punctured and the frame bent, the detective said.

“I believe it will be totaled through insurance,” Cayer said.
