RUMFORD – Area camp owners are being advised by Oxford County police to check their properties to see if anything is missing.
Oxford County Sgt. Tim Holland said late Wednesday afternoon that an investigation by him and Maine State Police into 11 camp burglaries last week on Concord Pond Road in Woodstock turned up more than $1,000 worth of stolen tools and a boat trolling motor on Tuesday in Canton,
“We don’t know where they came from, but we think they were stolen the night before last,” Holland said in Rumford.
Among the recovered items were two reciprocating saws, a mitre saw, a sander, drill and a bottle jack in a case.
Holland said that along with the tools and motor, they also recovered a stolen go-cart taken from a Peru residence and returned it to its owner.
“Information we’ve had is that more than two individuals have been going out late at night and getting into camps, garages and houses. We don’t know where they’re dumping the stuff, though,” he said.
State police picked up two men for questioning, but have yet to charge anyone, Holland said.
Holland discovered the vandalized and burglarized Concord Pond Road camps after investigating a burglary complaint from one owner.
“All the doors were wide open. Some camps had broken windows, sliced screens and severe damage to doors. (The burglars) even broke doors in half on storage sheds,” he said.
Owners of the 11 Woodstock camps have been contacted, but police have yet to receive inventories on missing items.
Holland said people as far away as Roxbury Pond in Roxbury should check their camps and contact him at the Sheriff’s Office in Paris – 1-800-733-1421 and press 1 for a dispatcher – if anything is missing.
“One man is cooperating with police now, so, we’re trying to locate where this stuff belongs,” Holland added.
