GREENE – Due to lack of in-town responders for the volunteer fire and rescue service during regular business hours, fire Chief Joe Brown announced that the EMT squad has to reduce its emergency call volume.

Brown is working on a few license issues with the town and Maine Municipal Association.

Of the six fire and rescue team members, only two are in town during regular work hours. Brown said that’s resulted in situations when EMTs couldn’t respond.

Under the contract, United Ambulance responds to all 911 calls.

Brown said he hopes residents will understand why only certain calls will be dispatched to Greene’s EMT unit.

“We will still answer motor vehicle calls, traumas and chest pains,” Brown said. “The rest will be at the discretion of the sheriff’s department and United Ambulance.”
