WAIT OVER: Pennsylvania’s first slot-machine casino, Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Plains Township, near Wilkes-Barre. The $70 million casino features 1,100 machines, a bar and a food court with three restaurants.

EXPECT DELAYS: About the only sure bet is that traffic will be heavy. Casino officials say they expect thousands to show up, and will turn away gamblers if the building reaches its 5,000 capacity.

WHY IT MATTERS: The state plans to use gambling revenues to cut property taxes. Gambling opponents fear an increase in crime, bankruptcy, divorce and addiction.
