BUCKFIELD – Joining hundreds of organized memorial services around the world, members of the Lewiston Chapter of the Compassionate Friends, a national self-help support organization for families grieving the death of a child, will light candles Sunday, Dec. 10, in an act of symbolic remembrance.

The candlelighting will be part of a special service at 7 p.m. at the Buckfield Community Church, Turner Street, and will feature music, readings and special speakers. Coffee and light refreshments will follow and candles will be provided. All are welcome.

Annually, families, united in loss, light candles for one hour during the Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candlelighting, held the second Sunday in December. Candles are first lit at 7 p.m., local time, just west of the International Date Line. As candles burn down in one time zone, they are lit in the next, creating a 24-hour wave of light as the observance continues around the world.

With the theme “that their light may always shine,” the candlelighting has grown larger every year. The national Web site, www.compassionate friends.org, will feature a remembrance book on Dec. 10 for families to post tributes. The site will also host extended chat room hours.
