LEWISTON – A program to help older adults overcome the fear of falling will be held at SeniorsPlus.

Fear of falling is a major concern for older adults. It can lead to isolation, depression, a decline in overall health and decreased mobility. In an effort to address the issue, a partnership of organizations has brought an innovative program, “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls,” to Maine.

“A Matter of Balance” is an award-winning program designed for older adults in the community who limit their physical activity due to fear of falling. The program consists of eight two-hour sessions held over four weeks.

During the class, participants have group discussions, brainstorming, problem-solving and exercises for balance and strength. They also learn about assertiveness, ways to increase physical activity and how to improve home and personal safety.

The class will be offered at the SeniorsPlus from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in January. For more information, contact SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241, ext. 114.
