JAY – Police charged a girl under age 16 with causing a false public alarm after a written bomb threat was found by a student at the middle school Thursday morning.
Middle school students were moved to the high school gym for safety.
After the middle school was searched by police and firefighters, and the girl charged, a second threat was found written on high school property, Jay police Chief Larry White Sr. said.
Students from the middle school and high school were then moved to the middle school so a search of the high school could be conducted.
The source of the second threat hasn’t been determined, White said Thursday afternoon.
Police responded to the middle school at 8:59 a.m., White said, after a student found the first written threat and turned it into school personnel.
“There was no danger to students at any time,” school Superintendent Robert Wall said.
Once the student was identified after a short period of time, she admitted to making the threat and told authorities that there was no bomb on site, Wall said.
Notices were sent home to parents Thursday informing them of what went on, he said.
White cited a good collaborative effort on the investigation by police and school administrators.
“It was very smooth,” Wall said. “Everyone did a nice job.”
Wall said he appreciated how well students and staff handled the situation as they went through the emergency response process.
White declined to give the girl’s age who was charged, but said she was released to her parents.
The second bomb threat remains under investigation.
“We do have some leads we are pursuing,” he said.
Besides White, Detective Richard Caton, Cpl. Jeff Fournier and reserve officer Michael Mejia helped with the investigation. Police left the schools at about 1 p.m., White said.
